Bloody Bay, Negril, Jamaica
A Hole in the Cloud
At Bloody Bay, the sun punches a hole through heavy cloud while a small sailboat sits on the horizon.
The sky over Bloody Bay was heavy — a thick grey sheet — and then it opened. A bright shaft punched through, lighting a small circle of sea while everything around it stayed dark.
A tiny sailboat sits on the horizon inside that lit circle. It is almost lost at first glance; once you see it, the whole frame resolves around that speck.
I kept the frame wide enough to show how much cloud there still was. The interest is the contrast between the bright break and the weight of the weather, not a tidy postcard sunset.
This is the same bay as several other frames in the catalogue. The light that afternoon did not last long.

16mm on the 16-35mm, stopped a little for depth across sea and sky. Exposure held for the bright break so the surrounding cloud stayed dark.
