Black, Green and Gold, Held High
A single performer, a raised flag, and a stage dressed in the colours of the island.
Some photographs are about waiting for the light. This one is about recognising the peak of a gesture while it's happening.
The stage was already dressed for it. Jamaican flags hung from the ceiling beams behind the performer, big panels of black, green and gold, the diagonal cross repeating across the room. A long sweep of fabric in the same colours ran down from his feet and off the bottom of the frame, like a banner unrolled from a balcony. Even before anyone moved, the space was saying where we were.
Then the performer stepped up, in camouflage trousers with a sash of green and gold at the waist and a green cap, and lifted a flag on a pole high over his head. The flag caught the light and folded over itself as it moved. His other arm hung loose at his side, his gaze directed down and out toward the room. It was a held pose more than a dance step, and that's what made it photographable: a moment of stillness inside a show that was otherwise all motion.
I framed it vertically, because everything about the moment ran up and down. The fabric pours diagonally from upper right to lower left. The flagpole cuts the other way, from his raised hand up to the top edge. Between those two lines the figure stands almost dead centre, slightly raised, so the eye lands on him first and then follows the colour outward. The hanging flags in the background are soft enough to read as setting rather than clutter.
The light inside was warm and uneven, a mix of stage lamps and room lighting, and it gave the skin tones and the fabric a golden cast. I didn't fight that in processing. The warmth is part of what the room felt like from where I stood.
I'm careful with event photographs. The person on that stage was working, performing for a room full of people, and the picture belongs as much to his performance as to my timing. What I hope comes through is the pride in the gesture: the flag up, the colours everywhere, a performer giving the moment its full weight.

Sony A7R III · Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II · 117mm · 1/250s · f/2.8 · ISO 3200
Indoor stage light is never as bright as it looks, and performers don't hold still for long, so this is the classic low-light event recipe. The 70-200mm wide open at f/2.8 lets in as much light as the lens can, and ISO 3200 brought the shutter up to 1/250s, fast enough to freeze the figure and most of the flag's movement. At 117mm I could fill the frame from my spot without getting in anyone's way, and the shallow depth of field at f/2.8 kept the hanging flags behind him soft. The A7R III handles ISO 3200 cleanly enough that the noise stays out of the way, especially in a warm, contrasty scene like this one.
