Lone Boat Under Storm Clouds

Seven Mile Beach, Negril, Jamaica

Small Boat, Big Sky

Off Seven Mile Beach, a heavy ceiling of cloud and one white hull crossing a sheet of gold.

Scale is the whole picture here. Take the boat out and you have a sky and some water. Put it back and suddenly the sky is enormous.

The clouds take up the top half of the frame, layered and heavy, grey and slate blue with a warm, smoky yellow pressing through at the upper right. Lower down they break into rounded clumps with small gaps of pale sky between them. Along the horizon a thin line of land runs across the frame, low hills in the distance, and on the right a rocky point with buildings sitting on it, the edge of the shoreline catching a little light.

Below all of that, the sea. The light coming through the clouds lands on the water as a broad sheet of gold and bronze, broken into thousands of small ripples. Closer to the bottom of the frame it darkens into deep grey-blue, the texture of each wavelet still visible. And on that gold surface, a little left of centre, is a small white boat with a figure standing at the stern, heading right with a short wake behind it.

I chose a vertical frame because the drama is vertical: sky above, water below, and a tiny human-sized mark between them. A horizontal version would have given the shoreline more weight. I wanted the shoreline to be a thin line and the boat to be the only thing that moves.

Placement mattered. The boat sits roughly on the line between the bright water and the darker foreground, and just below the horizon, so it's lit by the same gold that runs across the sea. Put it in the dark water and it would vanish. Put it closer to the land and it would read as part of the shore.

I don't know where the boat was going, and I won't pretend to. What the frame holds is simpler: weather building overhead, and someone out on the water anyway, crossing a band of light that wouldn't last.

From the bag

Sony A7R III · Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II · 70mm · 1/5000s · f/7.1 · ISO 3200

1/5000s freezes everything here, from the boat's wake to the individual ripples, which is a big part of why the water reads as such a detailed surface. That said, ISO 3200 was more than the scene needed; at ISO 100 the same exposure would still have given me a shutter speed well above what's needed to freeze a moving boat. The A7R III's clean high-ISO files saved it. At 70mm, the short end of the telephoto, I had room for both the sky and the water while keeping the boat large enough to read, and f/7.1 holds the boat and the distant shoreline in focus together.
