Alcatraz Island, San Francisco
VAULT 1934–1963
At the cellhouse main entrance on Alcatraz, the armory vault door — VAULT 1934–1963 — and a plaque quoting James V. Bennett from 1946.
At the cellhouse main entrance on Alcatraz, the armory vault door is still in place — heavy steel, painted, lettered VAULT 1934–1963.
Beside it, a brass plaque. The plaque quotes James V. Bennett and is dated 1946. The words on the plaque are about the prison's purpose; the door is about how that purpose was locked down.
I framed the door square-on, with the plaque readable on the right. This is not a romantic ruin shot. It is a working piece of institutional hardware left in situ for visitors to see.
The light inside the entrance is flat and cool. That suits steel better than warm afternoon sun would.

Moderate wide focal length, stopped down so lettering on the door and the plaque both hold. White balance left cool to match the interior.
